Infection prevention & control
Most residents here live with other health conditions, so a common virus is not a small thing. Infection prevention is part of every shift, and visitors are part of it too.

What we ask of you
Before you visit
Stay home when you are unwell
Fever, cough, sore throat, new runny nose, vomiting or diarrhea: please postpone the visit and call instead. A phone or video visit can be arranged.
Clean your hands on the way in and out
Hand sanitizer is at the entrance and on each unit. Hand hygiene is the single most effective thing a visitor can do.
Check in at reception
Screening questions and any current masking requirement are handled at the entrance so the team knows who is in the building.
Follow signage on a resident's door
Additional precautions signs mean gowns, gloves or masks are required. Ask a nurse before entering — the sign is there to protect that resident.
What we do
Our routine practices
- Routine practices on every shift: hand hygiene, point-of-care risk assessment, protective equipment, and cleaning of shared equipment between residents.
- Surveillance for respiratory and gastrointestinal illness, so clusters are identified early and reported to Public Health when required.
- Additional precautions — contact, droplet or airborne — applied for individual residents when indicated, with clear signage.
- Seasonal immunization offered to residents and staff, and outbreak measures such as restricted visiting used only as long as they are needed.
- Environmental services cleaning schedules for high-touch surfaces, with enhanced cleaning during an outbreak.
- Education and in-services for staff across departments, including infection prevention refreshers.
During an outbreak
How you will be told
When an outbreak is declared, a notice is posted at the top of every page on this website and at the main entrance, and families of affected residents are contacted directly by the unit. Notices carry an end time and disappear on their own, so a page never shows a restriction that has already been lifted.
Visiting restrictions during an outbreak are a last resort and are kept as narrow as possible — often limited to a single unit. Designated support persons and end-of-life visits are accommodated.
